MacWorld fever has come and gone. It has been a roller-coaster ride
for most Mac users, I reckon. HRH Steve Jobs was absent from the very
last Apple keynote at MacWorld. Phil kind of disappointed me with a poor
performance and product release during the keynote.Maybe I expected too much from it all. Still, the internet is always buzzing with announcements about everything Mac. I’d like to share some of my favourite Apple websites:
News and reviews
The Unofficial Apple Weblog
The ultimate starting point and a must-read for every Mac user and Apple lover. TUAW is one of the largest and most popular news website for all things Apple-related.
MacNN
Besides news, MacNN also showcases and reviews products and accessories that will go with your Apple goods.
MacWorld
It’s the online version of the printed magazine. MacWorld features Apple news and reviews on popular Mac applications and other electronic paraphernalia.
Ars Technica’s Apple section
Ars Technica is one of the internet gargantuans on news and tech. They’re also kind enough to provide a separate stream just for Apple news.
MacRumors
If you want to be with the elite of Apple news, read about it here. As the name states, MacRumors is a reputable source of rumors about upcoming Apple products. Some turn out to be hoaxes (pretty funny ones, actually) but most of the time, they’re pretty spot on. But in the end, rumors will be rumors, so this site should be taken with a pinch of salt.
AppleInsider
Insider news. Hmm… But seriously, this is where most of the stuff on MacRumors come from.
Alltop’s Mac section
Alltop was launched not long ago. Their aim is to aggregate news by topic from a huge repository of sites and list them all on one page.
LifeHacker’s Mac section
We all know and love LifeHacker. Personally, I love their DIY tips, some are pretty way out there. They also have a dedicated Mac section to review and suggest cool apps to download. In addition to that, they feature How-to’s and “hacks” for your Mac.
Technical Support
Mac OS X Hints
The Mac users “How-to” and troubleshooting guide for those innate Mac issues that we’ve so come to love and embrace. If you run into any issues with your Mac, this is the first place to search. They also list a lot of tips which are stumbled-upon by users.
Hackint0sh
For more advanced troubleshooting, ask the gurus at Hackint0sh. It started out as a site for inspiring individuals to discuss about running OS X on third-party components (hacked Macs) and has now blossomed into the most respected Mac hacks site.Hackint0sh is also the forum for a lot of iPhone users to gather and discuss about yellowsn0w and hacking the iPhone i.e. unlocking, jailbreaking, third-party application repositories, etc.
Apple Pro Tips
Do you think that you know everything there is to know about Mac OS X? Check out the monthly pro tips from Apple and be at the top of your game.
Just wacky
Cult of Mac
This website is for the Apple fanboi. Or maybe not. They feature a lot of product placement (especially Apple’s) and basically how life revolves around the Mac.
Macenstein
Macenstein is a very wacky website, with the weirdest anecdotes. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out their random Mac chick. Chick and gadgets, ah what a wonderful combination (for us geeks).
The Joy of Tech
I love this tech comic. It pokes fun at a lot of things, even Apple!
Mac Applications
Version Tracker
To get you started off, Version Tracker is akin to Download.com. They have a huge variety of applications for both Mac and Windows. It also lists apps for iPhone and Palm OS.
MacUpdate
Unlike Version Tracker, MacUpdate is solely for Mac applications. Other than that, their system of listing apps is quite similar.
MacApper
They hit a rough patch a couple of months ago due to lack of writers but recently, MacApper has returned from the dead and is currently on the road to recovery! They review popular paid and sometimes, hopefully, free Mac applications.
iusethis
iusethis is a great site where Mac users can share their experiences with applications and vote on which applications they use. If certain applications gain popularity quickly, they will be promoted on the “Hot” list. Their “Interesting apps” list is also worth checking out.iusethis also aggregates software reviews from several sites and places the links on the application’s page, thus making it very easy for end-users like us to know if that piece of application has been trialed and tested.
BrokenStones
You’ll have to thank me for this later. If you’re looking for an invite, they can be obtained from their invite site. The instructions are pretty complicated but trust me, it’s worth joining this Mac community.I have a couple of invites left so I you’re in a dire need for one, just shout out in the comments with your email address. If the demand is high, you’ll have to devise something to catch my attention.
**** Editor’s update : After this article came out, the owners of BrokenStones went a bit off their heads and demanded to Jackson that we remove their site from this article. Never mind that the article was already published. Never mind that Google had probably already cached the page. Never mind that people can still find their site by Googling it. Nope. They went totally PMS on us, revoked Jackson’s invites and insinuated that we had blown their cover and they would have to make a run for it! In the end, they asked us to just remove the weblink so we agreed. Anything for a quiet life! ****
MakeUseOf’s Mac section
Yeah, you didn’t think that I’d leave this out, did ya? MakeUseOf’s Mac section is growly substantially, covering reviews on popular and cool Mac apps. We also have a biweekly dedicated column for Mac newbies called Macnifying OS X.
